Removing Tough Carpet Stains Naturally
Carpet stains are inevitable, especially when you have kids or pets in the house. It could be a soft drink spill, mud marks, pet ‘accidents’ or even ketchup.
Add to it the fact that we usually don’t tackle the stain immediately and leave it for a day or two before confronting it. That makes a ‘tough’ stain that’s going to take some work to get rid of.
Conventional carpet stain removers may promise to magically make stains vanish, but the truth is they are costly, filled with harmful ingredients and can easily be replicated at home – with natural ingredients and a bit of creativity!

DIY Homemade Carpet Stain Remover Recipe
What you need:
- Baking soda 2 teaspoons (where to get it)
- ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide (where to get it)
- ¼ cup of eco-friendly dish washing liquid (where to get it)
Method:
- First identify the stain. If the stain is still wet, begin by blotting it out with tissue papers. If the stain is dry (a couple of days old, perhaps), just continue with the following steps.
- For this technique, you will need two separate bowls. In one bowl, mix the baking soda and essential oil. In another bowl, mix the hydrogen peroxide and eco-friendly dish soap.
- Begin by dusting a medium coat of baking soda, from the first bowl, onto the stain.
- Now pour on the hydrogen peroxide mixture, from the second bowl, onto the baking soda.
- Adding the acidic hydrogen peroxide onto the alkaline baking soda will create a fizzy reaction that will last for a few seconds. This reaction will help dissolve whatever stain is in the carpet.
- Scrub, and wipe away the excess water. Check to see how well the stain has faded. If needed, repeat again.
Tips
- Most recipes I’ve seen tell you to mix both the hydrogen peroxide (or vinegar) and the baking soda together and use. This doesn’t work, simply because both mediums will have neutralized each other.
- Using the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (or vinegar) separately, one after the other is the correct technique that will get rid of your toughest stains.
