DIY Essential Oil Laundry Detergent – Powdered Version

June 4, 2017 By Aspen Leave a Comment

Make an incredibly easy, non-toxic, cheap and effective DIY essential oil laundry detergent! Bonus: it makes your laundry smell clean, fresh and fantastic!

I didn’t know it was this easy to make laundry detergent that works! All you need is a few household ingredients and essential oils. Combine them up and your DIY essential oil laundry detergent is ready!

If you have sensitive skin that gets irritated from store-bought laundry detergents, then it’s high time you started making your own. My own son developed an itchy eczema patch because of commercial laundry detergent which only reduced a lot after we stopped using the product.

This laundry detergent recipe is also customizable in terms of scent. There are countless essential oils you can use for a fantastic scent that will leave your laundry smelling amazing.

DIY Essential Oil Laundry Detergent Blends

Here are some nice blends to use:

  • Lavender + Peppermint + Lemon
  • Wild orange + Lemon
  • Cedarwood + Lemon
  • Lavender + Peppermint
  • Rose + Lavender

DIY Essential Oil Laundry Detergent Recipe

Make an incredibly easy, non-toxic, cheap and effective DIY essential oil laundry detergent! Bonus: it makes your laundry smell clean, fresh and fantastic!

What you need

  • 3 cups washing soda (where to get it)
  • 3 cups borax (where to get it)
  • 2 bars of unscented soap (you can use castile soap bars or Fels Naptha)
  • 35 drops of essential oils
  • Cheese grater (where to get it)
  • Mixing bowl
  • A pair of gloves
  • Large mason jar (where to get it)

Directions

  1. Begin by grating 2 bars of unscented soap with your cheese grater. Use the medium size holes.
  2. Now into your blender, add the grated soap, 3 cups of washing soda, 3 cups of baking soda and 3 cups of borax. Blend them well to form a powder. It won’t be fine but it should at least be even.
  3. Scoop up the powder into a large airtight jar.
  4. Use 1 – 2 tbsp per load.
  5. Here’s to clean and fresh smelling laundry!

My Tips

  • This DIY essential oil laundry detergent doesn’t foam but it will clean your laundry very well.
  • Got hard water? Then you’ll need to add ¼ to ½ cup of this laundry detergent to get your clothes squeaky clean.
  • If you want to use a fabric softener, then add ¼ cup of white vinegar. This will also neutralize any stinky smells like in gym clothes or puke on a toddler’s shirt.
