What is Ylang Ylang Oil?
Scientific Name: Cananga odorata
Also known as flower of flowers, ylang ylang flowers are unique sweet smelling flowers that are used to extract ylang ylang oil. It’s pronounced “EElang EElang”. To extract ylang ylang oil, the curly yellow flowers are steam distilled.
Ylang ylang flowers are native to South East and Central Asia, in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Since it is a natural aphrodisiac, it would be sprinkled on the beds of newlyweds for a romantic effect.

1. For Combination Skin
Ylang ylang oil is good for balancing excess oil production on the skin. This makes it good for combination skin. Another oil that works wonders for combination skin is geranium oil. You can blend these two together into your usual facial moisturizer. Or make your own simple and chemical-free face cream as follows:
- Facial Cream: Into a Magic Bullet blender, add ½ cup of shea butter. Now add 2 tbsp of rose water and 1 tsp of vegetable glycerin. Blend till you get a white cream. Transfer the cream into an amber glass jar then add 5 drops of ylang ylang essential oil, 5 drops lavender essential oil and 3 drops geranium essential oil. Mix well with a disposable chopstick or handle of a spoon. Your face cream is ready! Use a pea-sized amount on your face. This cream can last for 6 – 12 months, provided you keep it away from contamination, sunlight and water.
2. Bath Oil
Make a luxurious bath oil with ylang ylang oil! It has therapeutic properties of calming the mind and dispelling feelings of sadness and negativity. It also nourishes and improves skin plus makes you smell amazing! Bonus: Ylang ylang is a natural aphrodisiac!
- Uplifting Ylang Ylang & Citrus Bath Oil: Add 10 drops of ylang ylang oil and 10 drops of sweet orange oil into an amber bottle. Fill the bottle with ½ cup of fractionated coconut oil. Store in your bathroom cabinet. Pour 1-2 tbsp of this bath oil blend into a warm bath. Soak in for as long as you want!
3. Facial Toner
Since ylang ylang oil regulates sebum on the skin, it’s good to be used to make a facial toner for combination skin & oily skin too. Check out this recipe:
- Ylang Ylang Geranium & Rose Face Toner: Into an amber spray bottle, add 1 tsp vegetable glycerin, followed by 3 drops ylang ylang essential oil and 3 drops geranium essential oil. Now fill the spray bottle with ½ cup of organic rose water. Close the bottle and shake well to mix up. To use, mist on a clean dry face with your eyes closed. When it dries, apply moisturizer. If you want to go natural, use a pea-sized amount of shea butter to moisturize.
4. Treats Boils
To naturally treat boils, you can use ylang ylang essential oil. Never pop a boil as this will lead to the spreading of more boils. Instead, get a bowl and add ½ cup of warm water, 2 tbsp sea salt, 4 drops tea tree oil and 4 drops ylang ylang oil. Mix everything together. Soak and wring out a washcloth in the bowl and press it on your boil. Repeat until the water grows cold then discard.
5. Soothes Skin Irritations
The anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties of ylang ylang oil make it good for soothing skin irritations.
6. Has Antiseptic Properties
Ylang ylang oil has antiseptic properties so it’s good for treating acne and wounds. For acne, you can mix 2 drops of ylang ylang oil in 1 tsp of witch hazel and apply on your skin as an antiseptic acne treatment.
