How to Dilute Essential Oils with Coconut Oil
Essential oils are liquid plant extracts that come in tiny bottles. They are very concentrated substances and a little goes a long way.
The standard way to dilute essential oils is with carrier oils. Carrier oils are simply oils derived from plants, such as coconut oil or animals, such as emu oil. Most carrier oils are plant based. The reason why carrier oils are preferred is because they are dense fatty substances that the essential oils can mingle with very well to form a well combined mixture.
Coconut oil is a much loved carrier oil! It has a creamy consistency that feels very nice when applied to skin. Here’s how to dilute essential oils with coconut oil
- To dilute essential oils with coconut oil, simply add 2 drops of essential oils to 1 tsp of coconut oil. This is a 2% essential oil dilution rate, which is the recommended safe dilution rate for adults.
- If using for babies 3-24 months, use a 0.25% dilution rate which is 1 drop of essential oil in 4 tsp of coconut oil.
- For toddlers 2-6 years, use a 0.5% dilution rate, which is 1 drop of essential oil in 2 tsp of coconut oil.
- Then for children 6-15 years, a 1% dilution rate meaning 1 drop in 1 tsp of coconut oil should be sufficient.

How to Use Coconut Oil Mixed with Essential Oils

1. Bug Repellent
Did you know that coconut oil is a great medium to use for bug repellent essential oils? Yup, that’s right! When you mix bug repellent essential oils such as citronella, citriodora or lemongrass in coconut oil, you can create your very own bug cream that you can slather all over your body before heading out.

2. Face Wash

3. Anti-Aging Facial Moisturizer
Coconut oil is a nice moisturizer on its own. If you add essential oils, you can make it more moisturizing, nourishing and wrinkle-reducing. To make a DIY Coconut Oil Facial Moisturizer, dump ½ cup of coconut oil into a large bowl. Now add 5 drops lavender oil, 5 drops tea tree oil, 5 drops geranium oil, 5 drops lemongrass oil and 5 drops frankincense oil. Whip everything up into a soft fluffy cream for 2 minutes using a hand mixer. Transfer it into a mason jar. Apply a tiny amount onto your clean face.
4. Effective Pain Cream
If you’ve got a headache, muscle pain or any painful area on your body, mix pain reliving essential oils in coconut oil and apply! A simple pain cream is as follows: Get ¼ cup of coconut oil in a bowl. Now add 10 drops peppermint oil, 10 drops eucalyptus oil and 10 drops sweet marjoram oil. Mix everything up and store in a mason jar. Massage onto the painful area, such as the temples in case of a headache.
5. Moisturizing Body Cream
Throw out your chemical-laden body cream and use this instead! Whip up 1 cup of coconut oil in a large bowl together with 20 drops of geranium essential oil. Transfer the cream into a mason jar. Apply to your body after a shower.
6. Hair Growth Mask
Coconut oil is one of the oils that actually boost hair growth, did you know? When combined with hair growth promoting essential oils, you can promote longer, thicker and healthier hair! Get a bowl and add 1 tbsp of coconut oil. Warm it till it liquefies. Now add 2 drops rosemary oil, 2 drops lavender oil and 2 drops cedarwood oil. Mix everything together with a spoon. Massage this onto your scalp for 2 minutes. Tie your hair up and throw on a shower cap. After 30 minutes, wash your hair very well, shampooing twice if necessary.
