How to Dilute Essential Oils with Coconut Oil

Essential oils are liquid plant extracts that come in tiny bottles. They are very concentrated substances and a little goes a long way.

The standard way to dilute essential oils is with carrier oils. Carrier oils are simply oils derived from plants, such as coconut oil or animals, such as emu oil. Most carrier oils are plant based. The reason why carrier oils are preferred is because they are dense fatty substances that the essential oils can mingle with very well to form a well combined mixture.

Coconut oil is a much loved carrier oil! It has a creamy consistency that feels very nice when applied to skin. Here’s how to dilute essential oils with coconut oil

  • To dilute essential oils with coconut oil, simply add 2 drops of essential oils to 1 tsp of coconut oil. This is a 2% essential oil dilution rate, which is the recommended safe dilution rate for adults.
  • If using for babies 3-24 months, use a 0.25% dilution rate which is 1 drop of essential oil in 4 tsp of coconut oil.
  • For toddlers 2-6 years, use a 0.5% dilution rate, which is 1 drop of essential oil in 2 tsp of coconut oil.
  • Then for children 6-15 years, a 1% dilution rate meaning 1 drop in 1 tsp of coconut oil should be sufficient.
