Freshen up your car by using any of these 3 DIY Essential Oil Car Air Freshener Recipes!
I don’t know about you guys but air car fresheners can give me a headache. Besides that, they are filled with toxic artificial fragrances and have really strong perfumes that can linger in the car for years – not kidding. If you’re like me, then you’d want to find natural and safer alternatives right? And I’m glad you’re here because I’m going to share three good DIY essential oil car air freshener recipes.
Okay so there are quite a number of DIY essential oil car air fresheners out there. But some of them don’t work so well. Fortunately, there are about three recipes that do work effectively and they’re worth a try! The first recipe is a DIY Essential Oil Car Freshener Spray. The second one is using a wooden clothespin clipped onto your car’s air vent. The third recipe involves storing a jar of baking soda + essential oils in your car. Both are effective and can last considerably longer compared to hanging craft felts or wool balls on the mirror. In my opinion, that is.
DIY Essential Oil Car Air Freshener – 3 Recipes
1. DIY Car Air Freshener Spray
This is the first recipe I had to share. It’s so easy and it works so much better than anything else, really.
What you need
- 2 oz spray bottle (where to get it)
- ¼ cup distilled water (where to get it)
- ¼ cup rubbing alcohol (where to get it)
- 25 drops ylang ylang essential oil (where to get it)
Directions
- In your spray bottle, pour in ½ cup distilled water and rubbing alcohol each.
- Now carefully add 25 drops of ylang ylang essential oil. It has a fun, flowery and sweet bubblegum kinda scent that is SUPER long lasting. If you’re a man and don’t want ylang ylang, try essential oils like bergamot or cypress. These ones smell fresh and manly.
- Spray in your car and on the seats and carpets too. Don’t overdo it, though, since it’s a small closed space and you don’t want the scent to be concentrated.
2. DIY Car Air Freshener using a Clothespin & Essential Oils
This is a super simple and very effective car air freshener. You’ll love it.
What you need
- Small wooden clothespin
- 10 drops of wild orange essential oil (where to get it)
Directions
- Place 5-10 drops of wild orange essential oil on your clothespin.
- Clip the clothespin on your car’s air vent.
- This works whether your air vent is on or off or blowing hot air or cold air!
- Add more drops of oil when you notice the scent has faded/disappeared.
3. Baking Soda + Essential Oils Air Freshener Jar
Want a subtle and pleasant scent that doesn’t overpower? Use this baking soda + essential oils jar recipe. The baking soda absorbs unpleasant scents while the essential oils refresh and scent stale air.
What you need
- Cardboard paper
- Mason jar (where to get it)
- ½ cup baking soda (where to get it)diff
- 25 drops of wild orange essential oil (where to get it)
Directions
- First cut the cardboard into a circular shape to act as the cover for your mason jar. Next, we have to make holes on the cardboard (which is the jar covering) to fit it on the mason jar lid. So remove the lid from the mason jar. Then trace the metal lid on the cardboard and cut out the circle. Keep the lid to screw tight the mason jar.
- Pock holes into the cardboard circle. You can make 15 small holes.
- Now add ½ cup of baking soda in a mason jar, followed by the essential oil drops.
- Stir everything together with a stainless steel stirring rod.
- Now place the lid and cardboard circle and screw tight.
- Store in the cup holder. Shake to release the nice scents into your car. Discard and make a fresh jar every month or so.
