3 DIY Essential Oil Air Freshener Recipes
1. Air Freshener Spray for Musty Spaces
To make this air freshener, all you need is distilled water and a few favorite essential oils. Shake them very well together to create your air freshener! Note: You can use purified water in place of distilled water but this will shorten the shelf life of your air freshener. Distilled water ensures your air freshener lasts for longer (for than a month) without going bad. You can store it in the refrigerator if you wish.
What you need
- 10 drops peppermint (where to get it)
- 10 drops spearmint (where to get it)
- 10 drops sweet orange (where to get it)
- 8 oz distilled water (where to get it)
- 8 oz amber glass spray bottle (where to get it)
- Small funnel
Method
- Combine the essential oils and distilled water.
- Pour into the spray bottle with the help of a small funnel.
- Shake well before each use and spray around the place.
2. Bad Odor Absorbing Air Freshener
This is a solid air freshener that you will store in a region of your home that’s frequently funky smelling – whether it’s the toilet, shoe rack, pantry or under the kitchen sink. The baking soda neutralizes bad odor and the essential oils release nice fragrances into the air. Make sure to shake the mason jar often to release the scents into the area.
What you need
- ½ cup baking soda (where to get it)
- 10 drops eucalyptus (where to get it)
- 10 drops tea tree (where to get it)
- 10 drops lemon (where to get it)
- 4 oz mason jar (where to get it)
- Small cotton cloth & rubber band
Method
- Add the baking soda to the mason jar and drop in the essential oils.
- Mix well with a disposable chopstick or back of a long spoon.
- Cover the mason jar with a small cotton cloth and secure it with a rubber band.
- Place the jar in an area where you’d like to eliminate bad odor whether it’s near the trashcan, a musty basement, stale pantry, the closet, the toilet, near the dirty clothes basket and other areas.
- Shake the jar often to release the scent.
- After about a month or more, when the scent has started to fade, you can add more drops or create a fresh batch and use the baking soda as a carpet freshener. You can do this by dusting it on the carpet, leaving it on overnight and vacuuming the carpet the next day.
3. Clean Home Diffuser Blend
Essential oil diffusing is a popular way of using beautiful smelling essential oils. Not just for the aromatics though, this air freshener diffuser blend also contains antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that destroy germs in the air.
What you need
- 3 drops lemon (where to get it)
- 2 drops lime (where to get it)
- 2 drops sweet orange (where to get it)
- 1 drop grapefruit (where to get it)
- Non – plastic cold air diffuser (where to get it)
Method
Place the oils in your cold air diffuser together with an amount of water (about 90 ml), following the manufacturer’s instructions.
