What is Wild Bergamot Hydrosol?

Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) is not related to bergamot (Citrus bergamia) at all. Rather, it refers to a beautiful violet flower that has been used by the Native Americans as a valuable herb.

Other common names for wild bergamot hydrosol are bee balm and monarda hydrosol. It has a citrusy herbaceous and floral scent that’s pleasant. Its taste is sharp and spicy.

Benefits of Wild Bergamot Hydrosol

Below are some of the benefits of wild bergamot hydrosol:

1. Antiviral
Wild bergamot hydrosol is excellent for treating colds and cough because of its antiviral properties. You can take a tbsp twice a day as a healing tonic.

2. Anti-fungal
With its anti-fungal properties, wild bergamot hydrosol is helpful for treating fungal skin infections, candida rashes, thrush and fungal scalp infections.

3. Diuretic
Wild bergamot hydrosol has diuretic properties that make it good for reducing puffy eyes and swelling due to water retention.


Take a tbsp. of wild bergamot hydrosol in a glass of warm water as a digestive aid.


Because it has strong antibacterial properties, wild bergamot hydrosol is good for treating acne and itchy skin issues. It also acts as a good mouth rinse for bad breath and oral cavities.

How to Use Wild Bergamot Hydrosol

» Sinus Congestion
At bedtime, drink a tonic composed of 1 tsp wild bergamot hydrosol, 1 tsp german chamomile hydrosol and 1 tsp raw honey.

» Iced Tea
Combine 1 cup melissa hydrosol, 2 tbsp clary sage hydrosol, 2 tablespoons wild bergamot hydrosol, 1 tbsp peppermint hydrosol in 2 liters of spring water. Serve over ice cubes with a sprig of fresh rosemary. Add honey if you desire.

» Baby Colds/Cough
One drop of wild bergamot hydrosol can be applied neat on the soles of your baby’s feet. This is said to alleviate colds/cough.

» Pet Bad Breath or Gas
Add a tsp of wild bergamot hydrosol to your pet’s dinner.

» Acne Toner
Combine ¼ cup wild bergamot hydrosol and ¼ cup tea tree hydrosol in a cobalt blue spray bottle. Mist on face whenever it feels itchy or oily. Also use as a facial toner after cleansing.
