DIY Essential Oil Dusting Powder Recipe

January 28, 2017 By Aspen Leave a Comment

You’re buying dusting powder? Seriously, stop. Follow this DIY essential oil dusting powder and make it in a jiffy with minimal ingredients and most importantly, no toxic chemicals!

It is so easy to make your own essential oil dusting powder. You need just 3 ingredients: 2 of which are already sitting in your kitchen cabinet right now. The other ingredient: essential oil is an added bonus for its scent, cleaning and antibacterial properties.

What is Dusting Powder?

Dusting powder is just like face powder, only it’s for the body. Its commonly used after a shower. Many people use dusting powder for their babies, also known as baby dusting powder. You know the most popular one: it’s Johnson’s baby powder.

If you knew what toxic stuff are in those powders, you would throw yours right in the bin. And if you knew how simple it was to make your own, you’d never buy dusting powder again.

Here are the ingredients we shall be using:

Arrow root powder – It’s silky and keeps skin silky. It also absorbs any sweat and bad odors. Arrow root powder is also anti-irritant so if you suffer from bug bites, itchy skin and heat rashes, then it’s a good soothing agent.

Baking soda – This absorbs any bad odor and reduces sweating. It acts as a deodorizer but also softens skin. If you find that it irritates your skin, reduce the amount to ¼ cup.

Lavender oil – Smells fresh and floral. It’s a lovely essential oil for all skin types, even for babies’ skin. It’s also antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial.

What you Need

  • 2 cups arrow root flour
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 30 – 50 drops lavender essential oil*
  • Large bowl and whisk
  • Powder puff jar

*Note: For babies, use only 5 – 7 drops of essential oil. For more essential oils safe for babies, check out this post, What Essential Oils are Safe for Babies?

Method

  1. In a large bowl, dump in the arrow root flour and baking soda. Whisk well to combine the two powders.
  2. Now add the essential oil drops and continue whisking. You can break up any clumps using your fingers.
  3. Once well combined, transfer into a mason jar then fill up your powder puff container.
  4. You can keep refilling as it gets finished.
  5. After a shower, towel off then dust this powder all over your baby’s or your body. Avoid the eyes and mouth.

Other Great Smelling Essential Oils to Use

  • Peppermint
  • Lemon
  • Jasmine
  • Vanilla
  • Geranium
  • Rose

My favorites that I like to mix up for the baby are rose and lavender – heavenly!
