Sore itchy throats are the worst. And when they’re feel dry and gritty, it’s like a double kick on the face – or rather, throat. But don’t despair, you can get soothing relief when you have this DIY essential oil throat spray!
Combining just a few ingredients can leave you with a soothing and warming solution to be spritzed in your throat! We will be using a small spray bottle which can fit at least halfway in your mouth so the spray reaches your throat.
How Does an Essential Oil Throat Spray Work?
Fight germs. Essential oils are powerful antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial and antiseptic substances. They will fight off germs that are causing an irritated and sore throat, speeding up healing.
Soothe throat. While they are strong and powerful against germs, essential oils such as lavender can be soothing to a painful throat.
Give a warming sensation. When it’s cold outside is when sore throats crop up. Fortunately, many essential oils are warming. They keep the throat warm which prevents cold from worsening the problem. In this recipe, clove helps with the warming.
Have anti-inflammatory action. Inflammation is the primary characteristics of sore throats. Your throat and tonsils can get red and inflamed during a sore throat. All the essential oils below have potent anti-inflammatory properties that reduce inflammation and speed up healing.
Are moisturizing. Sore throats can get dry and scratchy. Essential oils like lavender help moisturize it. Meanwhile other essential oils like lemon can stimulate saliva production which can moisten your dry throat.

DIY Essential Oil Throat Spray Recipe
What you Need
- 2 tbsp distilled water (where to get it)
- 1 tsp raw honey (where to get it)
- 3 drops organic lavender oil (where to get it)
- 3 drops organic lemon oil (where to get it)
- 3 drops organic clove oil (where to get it)
- 1 oz amber glass spray bottle (where to get it)
Method
- In an amber glass spray bottle, add the honey followed by the essential oil drops.
- Swirl to combine then pour in the distilled water.
- Shake well to mix everything up.
- Store in a cool dry place.
- To use, open your mouth wide and spray in your throat. Of course, you won’t reach deep into your throat, but try to get some of it on your throat. Since we are using organic and edible oils, don’t worry about tiny droplets being ingested.
