What is Chicken Pox?
Chicken pox is also known as varicella. It is a disease that is highly contagious and caused by initial infection by the varicella zoster virus. Chicken pox is characterized by a skin rash that forms round itchy red blisters that eventually scab over. Chicken pox blisters usually appear on the face, chest, back and then spreads to the rest of the body.
Other symptoms of chicken pox include headaches, fever and tiredness. Chicken pox is an airborne disease and easily spreads to other people through coughs or sneezes or direct contact with blisters of an infected person. Chicken pox can spread 1 or 2 days before the rash appears until after the lesions crust over.
Chicken pox only affects a person once in their lifetime and even if it any re-infections of the virus occur, it doesn’t usually show any symptoms. The disease is common in children. It can also affect adults and when it does, it’s more severe than when it affects children.
